Nandankanan’s Purnima gets girl child

Bhubaneswar (Orissa) : Nine-year-old chimpanzee Purnima of Orissa’s Nandankanan Zoo on Wednesday gave birth to a female baby. The zoo staff spotted the baby during the routine check, Zoo sources said.

After the birth, Zoo staffs and officials distributed sweets while several rushed to the enclosure to see both the baby and her mother, who were are in good health.

Sources informed that the Zoo, which famous in the country for White Tigers, already houses two female chimps - 19-year-old Pampeta and nine-year-old Purnima - and one male 20-year-old Julu.

Nandankanan right now is housing 1,416 animals and birds of more than 121 species.The zoo enjoys a good reputation, internationally, for successfully breeding black panthers, gharial crocodiles and white tigers in captivity.

Interestingly, this is one of the few zoos where you can see animals in their natural environment.

Recently, Nandankanan Zoological Park became the first Zoo in the country to get the membership of World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), official said on Saturday.

More than 240 zoos and aquaria are institutional members of WAZA. WAZA supports the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy and known for support global conservation initiatives.

After WAZA membership, NZP authorities could participate in the annual conferences where they could meet renowned experts in various fields.
