Berhampur : People living in the rural areas particularly at the Niampadar and adjoining villages under the Jagannathprasad block in Ganjam have been suffering from an unknown disease for few weeks and leading a fearful uncertain life due to the negligence on part of the health department.

Reportedly, this unknown disease in these rural areas of the Jagannathprasad block has affected more than hundred people. All of a sudden, people feel the unbearable pain at various joints, swelling at joints and severe fever leading to deteriorating health condition.

The rural poor and ignorant people did not paid much attention to the disease but afterwards when several people got affected, they were shifted to local health center at Bhanjanagar and some were shifted to Berhampur keeping in view their critical nature of the disease.

There is a health center at Jagannathprasad, but due to lack of proper facilities owing to absence of doctors, the patients prefer to shift to these sub-divisional hospitals.

Most of the affected persons were middle aged and some were young persons. As per the symptoms of the disease, it was thought to be Chikun Guinea but the health department was not alert and has failed to give proper attention to the patients in these rural pockets of the district, even after two weeks since the emergence of this disease.

Sources added that the disease was also spreading to other nearby villages like Samapalli and Patadhar in the block.
