New Delhi : With the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, where Dr Manmohan Singh sworn-in as the Prime Minister of India for a record second time in a row, time has come to recollect all the Indian Prime Minister since Chaha Nehru aka Jawaharlal Nehru, who took the baton first.
Nehru continued as Prime Minister till May 27, 1964 from the Independence Day of 1947. Then Lal Bahadur Shastri took the baton and served the country from June 9, 1964 till Jan 11, 1966. Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi became India's Prime Minister in January 24, 1966 and continued in the post till March 24, 1977. She was best remembered for her 1975 infamous national emergency.
After the fall of Congress led by Indira Gandhi, who claimed herself as "India is Indira and Indira is India", first non-Congress Government came into being in India led by
Morarji Desai on March 24 1977 but he could last till July 28, 1979 because of difference of opinion among the allies. Charan Singh held the office from July 28, 1979 - Jan 14, 1980.
Iron lady Indira Gandhi again back to power on January 14, 1980 and held the office till October 31, 1984. After the assassination of Indira by a Sikh body guard, her son, Rajiv Gandhi with sympathy votes, became India's youngest ever Prime Minister on October 31, 1984 and held the office till December 2, 1989.
Vishwanath Pratap Singh became the Prime Minister on December 2, 1989 and held till November 10, 1990 followed by Chandra Shekhar from November 10, 1990 to June 21, 1991.
P.V. Narasimha Rao held the office from June 21, 1991 to May 16, 1996 followed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee from May 16, 1996 to June 1, 1996. H.D. Deve Gowda form June 1, 1996 to April 21, 1997 and Inder Kumar Gujral from April 1, 1997 to March 19, 1998. With Kargil victory and Pokharan Nuclear explosion, Vajpayee again stormed into 7 Race Course Road and held the office from March 19, 1998 till May 22, 2004. Since, May 22, 2004, Dr Manmohan Singh is ruling the country.
