Number of mental patients on rise in Orissa

Bhubaneswar ( Orissa): The number of mental patients in Orissa are increasing rapidly, says a report.

According to a report in every 1,000 peoples more than 58 are mental patients. So out of 3 crore 70 lakh people of Orissa, more than 21 lakh people are reported to be mentally ill. Out of the said figure more than 7 lakh 34 thousands are in severe condition, the report said.

It may be reached to 44 lakhs soon, if the present growth rate continues says the report.

The report further revealed that due to pressure and mental tension most of the people are suffering from this disease. Drinking of alcohol and drug addictions also helps in increasing the number of mental patients.

In an attempt to prevent this hazard, mental health programmes are being taken in as many as eight districts including Puri , Khurdha , Keonjhar , Kandhamal , Mayurbhanj , Dhenkanal , Bolangir , and Koraput districts.

The union government also providing assistance for this programmes but due to non –availability of specialists of mental diseases, the results of such programmes are seems to be far from satisfactory.

There are no specialists in Puri , Keonjhar , Koraput and Kandhamal districts.

Meanwhile the Orissa government has intimated all these problems to the centre and subsequently centre has decided to promote the mental disease department of Sri Ram Chandra Bhanja Medical College Hospital as a Centre excellence.
