Bhubaneswar ( Orissa) : The Orissa police has said it was contemplating to float a Special Task Force (STF) in the line of Maharastra to deal with organised crimes and terrorist activities in the State.

Addressing a press conference here, the Director General of Police, Manmohan Praharaj said a dedicated group needed to be set up to handle organised crimes such as kidnapping and other terrorist activities.

"The STF is in conceptual stage. We intend to form the force by initially taking 100 to 200 personnel equipped with modern technologies and up-to-date knowledge on newer forms of crimes," Praharaj said.

Of late criminals started to operate with modern communication technologies as well as in an organised manner, he said.

Police needed a strong act like Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) to back their action, the DGP said. Since industrialisation was going in a fast pace, it was necessary to get prepared to deal with crimes which could escalate in future, Mr. Praharaj said.

Spelling out his priorities, the DGP said he would try to strengthen intelligence network by making continuous up gradation of technologies and capacity building of personnel.

Five marine police stations, which was planned to keep eye on criminal activities along the coast, would be set up soon, Praharaj said.

"There were some technical difficulties such as permission from director general of shipping and resource crunch. We will definitely overcome them soon," he said.

Moreover, processes associated with formation of five companies of India Reserved Battalion (IRB) would soon be completed, Praharaj said.

The DGP, however, said police personnel would lay maximum emphasis to check custodial deaths and bring down human rights violation, he added.
