Hundreds of activists of CITU, AITUC, HMS, AICCTU, UTUC, TUCC, CPI (M), CPI, SFI and AISF on Wednesday shut down all Central Government establishments across Orissa protesting against the anti-people policies of the Congress led UPA Government.
The strike called by Left Trade Unions against surging inflation and the "anti-people" economic policies of the Centre turned out to be a total shutdown in the State with the two Left Parties including the CPI(M) and CPI supporting it.
Shouting slogans against the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram, the activists took out rallies at several major locations of the State and shut down all Central Government establishments including Banks, Insurance Companies, Post, Railway and Public Sector Units.
Meanwhile, rail and road traffic were disrupted in several parts of the State as the bandh call got good response while commuters in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack faced lot of problem due to the bandh.
Petrol pumps in several parts of the state were closed.
Hundreds of protesters staged demonstrations in front of State Bank of India and Reserve Bank of India offices in Bhubaneswar.
“The Central Government has completely failed in controlling the prices of essential commodities and it pursuing anti-people policies to satisfy capitalist forces, ”CITU State president Lambodhar Nayak said.
AITUC State secretary Souribandhu Kar asked Finance Minister Chidambarm to step down following his failure to control inflation. CPI (M) State secretary Janardan Pati claimed that the bandh call got massive response from across the State.
Several passenger trains have been stopped at Bhadrak, Balasore, Puri, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, an East Coast Railway release said.
Protesters also stopped goods trains at Talcher station, it added.
However, police sources said that no untoward incident was reported from any part of the State but train and bus services were disrupted following protesters squatting on the rail track and National Highways at several places.
