Bijay Kumar Sahu, Vice Chancellor of the Berhampur University became a laughing stuff on Saturday when he chewed Gutkha before the agitating students at Nursing college.
It may be noted that the students of the only Nursing College of the state located in the MKCG Medical campus here, have been agitating by closing the college following the missing of a student; Itirekha Mallik after the declaration of the result on Wednesday.
Itirekha had alleged that her mark in the practical paper had been reduced intentionally by a particular teaching staff resulting in the failure.
The Principal along with the staff had discussed with the agitating students on Friday night and had assured them that further she would look into the matter and no student of the college would fail in practical exam in future.
Despite the assurance, the students continued the agitation as a meeting was scheduled on Saturday afternoon with the VC of university at the Bhanja Vihar campus.
However, VC Bijay Kumar Sahu had reached at the Nursing College around 11 am following which the students had locked the gate and detained him within the college premises as they wanted to discuss the problems with the visiting VC.
VC Sahu had assured the girls that he would look into the problems of the students. Sahu had also stated that it was really a serious matter if a student has failed because of only a single mark and it might have been reduced intentionally.
He also informed the agitating students that till date the college authorities had not submitted the internal assessment paper of a first year student because of which her results had not been declared despite the fact that she was going to appear in the second year exam.
After getting some assurances from the VC, the students let him came out of their college premises. But afterwards, VC Sahu became a laughing stuff when he took a Gutkha packet from his pocket while discussing with the media people and began to chew before the agitating girl students.
When a student named Swapna reacted, Vice Chancellor Sahu stated, "though it was considered injurious, I don't think it is injurious for me".
Giving a fitting reply, Swapna asked the credential of teacher chewing the Gutkha at presence of girl students and asked him that what kind of scientific finding prove Gutkha was not injurious. Vice Chancellor Sahu became confused and hurriedly fled form the spot avoiding the media.
Then came the Principal Lenka and she was also detained for hours within campus when she was to leave the premises after she failed to answer the questions of students. The agitating students were not in a mood to withdraw their stir till the fulfilment of demands.
Notably, four years back such a agitation was held and had been withdrawn after the assurance of the then district collector Sanjay Singh. However, their demands had not been fulfilled till date, lamented Swapna stating that they would continue the stir.
