Paradip ( Orissa): The proposed strike on Wednesday by the employees and officers of Paradip Port Trust ( PPT ) have been called off, as 5 trade unions from the major ports of the country have decided to call off the agitation after successfully negotiated with the Union Shipping and Labour Ministries to solve their 7 points charter of demands on Tuesday.

Following the instruction from central trade union leaders we withdrew our agitation, said trade union leaders attended in the press conference.

As major demands of the port employees have been accepted by the concerned Ministries, following which the proposed strike was deferred, as a result our union at Paradip withdrew the proposed agitation, said senior trade union leader and Paradip port workers union working president Sudhakar Mantry on Tuesday evening.

According to him the union Shipping Minister T R Balu has agreed to fulfil 3 major demand at a high level meeting between Indian ports association, all India port and workers federation president S R Kulakarni and agitating leaders of 5 trade unions of major ports and central chief labour commissioner in New Delhi.

In three main demand that fulfilled includes 50 percent merger of basic pay as DA from 1 January 2007, enhanced linked bonus of port employees Rs 2500 to Rs 3500. A wage regulation committee would also be set up to consider the other financial benefits for the port employees.
