Congress man shot dead in Ganjam

Berhampur ( Orissa) : An Ex- Sarpancha owing allegiance to Congress under Badagada police station in Ganjam has been shot dead on Tuesday night. The reason of killing was yet to be ascertained; however there were various aspects including political rivalry, rivalry over timber smuggling and involvement of Maoists could not be ruled out.

According to sources, Dilip Swain along with some of his supporters had gone to the nearby pond for a bath in the evening. While, he along with his men was returning, some unidentified men had shot him. As many as five rounds had been fired. Moreover, the culprits had slit the neck of Swain even after the firing, suspecting that he might be alive.

Swain was found dead at the spot and the Badagada police had reached at the spot in the late night fearing the Maoists involvement, source informed while adding that another man had also been injured in the attack and was admitted at the local hospital. Local people had gheraoed the police as they had reached at the spot after three hours of killing.

Source informed that Dilip was Sarpancha of the Balrmapur Gram Panchayat few years ago. He was having a considerable clout in the area and was known as a close supporter of Sanakhemundi MLA Ramesh Jena. Moreover, Dilip’s relative Minati Swian happens to be the Chairperson of Dhorakote block.

Notably, Maoists presence had been reported in the areas under Badagada police station located in the border area of Ganjam-Kandhamal.

Keeping all the factors in view, the reason of killing was not ascertained yet. However, rivalry over the timber smuggling or political rivalry might be the cause of killing, source suspected while adding that Maoists involvement might not be rule out in the killing.
