Bhubaneswar ( Orissa ): Orissa Police Chief Manmohan Praharaj on Tuesday expressed confidence that the State would check the onslaught of leftwing insurgency in coming days.
Praharaj, who was under tremendous pressure for State Police’s failure against the armed rebellion of the outlawed CPI (Maoists), however posed a brave face, when he inaugurated the function of Indian Police Service Officers in Cuttack.
Most of the Orissa Cadre IPS officers attended the meet. The senior Police officials also reviewed performances of various Police ranges.
Orissa Government had urged the Centre to enhance State cadre of IPS by another 21 posts.
If the Centre sanctions the State Government's proposal, the number of IPS officers would go up to 180 from the existing 159.
The sanctioned IPS officers' strength in the State stands at 159. While 111 posts are filled up with the direct recruitment from IPS cadre, the rest 48 posts are filled up by giving promotion to the police office of OPS cadre to IPS ranks.
But a number of posts are still lying vacant. The State has 99 IPS officers, who were recruited directly whereas the posts of 48 promoted IPS officers have been lying vacant. List of 89 IPS officers are on display in Orissa Police website.
