Maoists' go on rampage in Orissa

Bhubaneswar (Orissa) : Armed militants of the outlawed CPI(Maoists) have stepped up its offensive against the Orissa Government once again by triggering landmine blasts in leftwing insurgency hit Malkangiri district.

The rebels damaged guest house of Essar Steel Company by triggering landmine blasts and also destroyed office furniture in Malkangiri.

The leftwing ultras, have called a two-day long bandh protesting Union Home Ministry's proposed Operation Green Hunt.

Normal life was badly hit in Malkangiri, Rayagada and Koraput due to the Red shut down. They have also blocked roads in several places in these three districts.

Sources said that the Andhra-Orissa Border Zonal Committee has decided to intensify their crack down on security men during the two-day long bandh.

According to Intelligence officials, the leftwing ultras might wreak mayhem in Malkangiri, Korapout, Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts in the coming two days.

"We are in touch with our counterparts in Andhra Pradesh and combing operations have already begun at several places in Koraput and Rayagada," Deputy Inspector General of Police, South-western range, Sanjiv Panda said.

Additional forces have been deployed at Kalimela, MV-79, Motu, Bhejangwada, Chitrakonda, MV-99, Balimela, areas of Malkangiri.

Similarly, steps also been taken at Narayanpatana, Semliguda, Damanjodi and Sunabeda areas of Koraput district, police sources added.

The expansion of Maoists activities in Orissa intensified after the PWG formed the Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee in 2001. The AOBSZC covers the four north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh - East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam and the five districts of southern Orissa.
