4 killed, 10 jawans injured as Maoists triggered landmine blast in Orissa’s Koraput district

Bhubaneswar (Orissa) : Making a mockery of the so-call high-level meeting on internal security chaired by Union Home Minister P Chidambarm in Raipur, the armed militants of the outlawed CPI (Maoists) on Saturday killed four persons and injured 10 Jawans of the elite Special Operation Group of State Police in Koraput district.
“The ultras triggered the landmine at Palur between Narayapatna and Laxmipur in Koraput district,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, southwestern range, Sanjiv Panda said adding four civilians were killed while 10 SOG jawans got injured.
“The victims were on their way to Laxmipur from Narayanpatna in a vehicle, when the landmine went off” DIG Panda informed.
The incident took place three kilometer away from Narayanpatana, the hot bed of anti-Government activities being carried by Chasi Mulia Advasi Sangathan, a pro-Maoists tribal outfit.
All the injured were taken to Koraput district headquarters hospital.This was the fourth landmine blast in the area during the last three years.
The incident, which sent a shock wave in entire southwestern parts of the State, came a day after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik joined hands with Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra to step up anti-Maoists operation jointly.
The Home Ministry had also agreed to provide additional five companies of CRPF and two choppers for operations during the meet.
Earlier, 13 people were killed in three different landmine blasts in 2008 and 2009. While two people were killed in 2008, as many as 11 people were killed in two separate landmine blasts in the same area last year.
The rebels have also called a two-day long bandh from January 25 protesting arrest of Saswati Das alias Mili Panda, wife of Sabyasachi Panda, State secretary, CPI(Maoists).
