Bhubaneswar (Orissa) : The Orissa Government on Tuesday sounded a high alert ahead of a two-day long bandh call given by the outlawed CPI (Maoists) starting from Wednesday.

Sources said that the Andhra-Orissa Border Zonal Committee has decided to intensify their crack down on security men during the two-day long bandh, which is being called in protest against the proposed 'Operation Green Hunt' to be launched in three major junctions of the Red Corridor.

According to Intelligence officials, the leftwing ultras may wreak mayhem in Malkangiri, Korapout, Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts in the coming two days.

"We are in touch with our counterparts in Andhra Pradesh and combing operations have already begun at several places in Koraput and Rayagada," Deputy Inspector General of Police, South-western range, Sanjiv Panda said.

The DIG said that additional companies of CRPF have been dispatched to three districts to avoid any untoward incidents. Sources said that the rebels have distributed leaflets seeking support to their bandh call.

Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Satyabrata Bhoi told over phone that additional forces have been deployed at Kalimela, MV-79, Motu, Bhejangwada, Chitrakonda, MV-99, Balimela, areas of the district ahead of the shut down.

Similarly, steps also been taken at Narayanpatana, Semliguda, Damanjodi and Sunabeda areas of Koraput district, police sources added.

The expansion of Maoists activities in Orissa intensified after the PWG formed the Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee in 2001. The AOBSZC covers the four north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh - East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam - and the five districts of southern Orissa.
