Bhubaneswar ( Orissa) : The historic Sun Temple at Konark near holy city of Puri, known as Black Pagoda, might lost its glory and artistic monuments with the Archaeological Survey of India keeping mum over the conservation of the Temple.
On Sunday, another stone slab fell from the Temple raising questions about its conservation being carried out by the ASI. The slab reportedly fell in the southern part of the temple.
On June 4 this year, one such incident occurred in which four slabs of the Black Pagoda came out. Konark Suraksha Samiti has been demanding proper restoration of the Sun temple.
“With Orissa Government and ASI under the Union Ministry of Culture, turning deaf ears, the world famous heritage site would lose its past glory,” said former Union Minister and senior BJP leader from Puri, Braja Kishor Tripathy.
A number of artefacts fell from the thirteenth-century edifice within the last six months and the State Government has no knowledge about it as is evident from the statement of the concerned Minister in the State Assembly, Tripathy, former Puri MP added.
Tripathy said a 15-member team of experts in 2006 had visited Konark, and after examining the temple opined that the sand filled inside the temple had receded by about 16 feet and it needed to be addressed immediately.
The committee insisted on engagement of skilled sculptors while carrying out the conservation work. Nothing visible has happened since then, while the monument has been decaying day by day, he lamented.
