TV scribe attacked in Orissa, Journalists sought SHRC intervention

Bhubaneswar ( Orissa) : In yet another case of attack on fourth pillar, a TV journalist Mr. Akhand, has been brutally attacked by a ruling party member in Puri District.
The Scribe, Mr. Akhand, a well - known journalist and a media activist, is working for 24 X 7 Oriya news channel- Kanak Tv. He was attacked while returning from his office.
The prime accused Pravakar Behera is a ward member and is belongs to ruling party BJD. Pravakar had got angry on the scribe because he opposed the unlawful cutting down of a tree by Pravakar from a government land in that area. And this news has been published in some section of media that leads to investigation in to this matter.
Angry over the protest to save tree, the accused had allegedly held the journalist forcibly by showing a sharpen weapon and beat him indiscriminately. He also allegedly warned the scribe to face wrath if he takes the help of police. He further allegedly snatched his gold chain.
Since the accused has allegedly threatened to kill him and his family members, local journalists urged the police to arrest the him immediately.
Meanwhile Santosh Sahu, a senior journalist and input head of Kanak Tv said, authority must ensure the protection of the journalist and his family members. He hopes that police will take action against the attacker. Manoj Jena, the convener of People’s Watch orissa state wing, said that it is a violation of fundamental rights of a defender under the declaration of UN declaration of human right defender.
Local journalists reacted heavily to this incident. The Press Club of Pipili (PCP) demanded police to take strong action against the accused. PCP requested Police DG and Home secretary to consider this case and provided him the adequate security. Meanwhile the eminent Journalists have condemned this attack, demanded early arrest of the accused.
It may be noted here that over 10 journalists have been attacked within four months. The continuous attack on Fourth pillar worries civil society.
