Bhubaneswar ( Orissa) : With the makeover of Ollywood, "Nudity is divine" seems to the new mantra of Oriya album industry these days.
"Ahe Daya Maya" is the latest video album to hit the controversy. The Cuttack based Utkal Bidyarthi Abhijaan through its secretary advocate Nishikant Mishra, the petition has sought directions for regulation on use of devotional songs and prayers in the music albums and taking action against those involved in distorting them to the extent of vulgarity.
Petitioner Mishra stated before the court that the prayer has been written by poet Ramakrushna Nanda and published by Sahitya Sopan during 1933-34. The devotional song was inspired by Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das and Mahatma Gandhi.
After Independence, the song was adopted as the prayer in Government schools in the State and generations after generations have grown up with this prayer in their hearts. It is also sung as the only Oriya prayer in Sabarmati Ashram today.
He alleged that recently a cassette company has portrayed the prayer, held in deep reverence by the multitude of the population, in an extremely inappropriate manner. This has hurt the sentiments of the people.
Vested interest groups are trying to defame Oriya culture and tradition for their business and TRP rating, he said.
He has pleaded the Court to direct immediate action against the production company and prohibit telecast of the song in any TV channel and ban sales of the VCDs of the album.
The Oriya video music album boom began six to seven years ago. With youngsters getting exposed to fashion shows and beauty pageants, and the hot re mix video like Kaanta Laga and Kaliyon ka Chaman, made the producers of music videos felt the time was ripe to cash in on the sleaze trend.
The emergence of a number of private television channels also helped the producers to find a platform for their videos. The producers of such video album little bother about the obscenity.
In an industry where production costs are low and profits are guaranteed once 20,000 cassettes are sold, there is no dearth of players. Each day a new company is floating to produce video album songs. With over 100 music companies currently in the race to churn out hits, some producers take the easy route and make raunchy videos that sell fast.
However many directors feel that not all music videos are vulgar. At times the girls come to the music companies requesting the producers for a chance to prove themselves at any cost.
If nudity is becoming part of our culture. What is worse is that everyone seems to be enjoying them.
The Government should also be directed to formulate laws to regulate use of religious and devotional songs and prayers in commercial albums.
