Bhubaneswar:
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Committee secretary Janardan Pati has accused the Orissa Government for terming the communal violence in Kandhamal district an ethno-communal conflict.
He said Kandhamal had witnessed one-sided attack on Christians at the hands of the Hindu fundamentalist forces. The members of the Christian community had not retaliated at any place in Kandhamal, he alleged.
Pati said the Government was wrong in saying that Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati was killed because he was opposing forcible conversion of Hindus into Christianity. "Has the government ever received any complaint about forcible conversion?" he queried.
"The CPI (M) leader said the truth was that Christians were being converted to Hinduism by use of force," Pati said.
He also countered the State government stand that there was spontaneous reaction from the people against the killing of Lakshmanananda Saraswati across the State.
The commotion was limited to Kandhamal and the bandh that was held on August 25 was fully supported by the government, he added.
