Bhubaneswar ( Orissa): Congress Rajya Sabha MP and former IAS officer Radhakant Nayak has sought help of the All India Congress Committee to escape from the Swami Laxmananda Saraswati murder case.

The move of Nayak, who is a close aid of AICC chief Sonia Gandhi for his Church background, came after media reports indicated his possible arrest in connection with the murder case.

Privileged sources on Sunday revealed that Nayak, 1962 Batch IAS officer, has taken up the issue with Sonia Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders and pleading him innocent and he had no role in the murder case.

So, after a closed door meeting, Sonia Gandhi asked AICC Orissa In-Charge Ajay Maken to issue a statement to defend the MP. As per the decision, Maken in his media statement termed the reports as "politically motivated" and "malicious".

Maken in his statement said, that the allegations were "nothing but malevolent assumptions with no element of reasoned evidence in its support".

The attempt was to divert attention from the "miserable performance" of the State police, perhaps under directions from its political masters, he said.

Joining Maken, AICC Spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, "It all seems politically motivated. After a gap of so many months, the (BJD-BJP) Government comes to know that somebody other than the original claimant of the crime (Maoists) is responsible for it.

Nayak also denied the allegations saying that the crime allegedly attributed to him was "beyond his nature and against his character". In a statement, he said that the report was "totally false and absurd" and was a "deliberate attempt to malign me and my political party."

Nayak who served the Central Government as Secretary was short-listed for the post of Union Cabinet Secretary during H. D. Deve Gowda Government. Being a Dalit-Christian socialist, leaders including Ramvilas Paswan and Sharad Yadav had backed his candidature then.

However some adverse IB report against him came as a hurdle. In 2004 he was elected to Rajya Sabha on Congress ticket. Hindutava forces always suspected his hand behind the killing. Alleged involvement of Nayak would also help BJP to target Sonia Gandhi and her appeasement policies.
