HC asks Raja Swain to approach EC

Bhubaneswar (Orissa): The Orissa High Court on Tuesday asked BJD leader Ranedra Pratap Swain aka Raja to approach Election Commission over rejection of his nomination paper.

The BJD lawmaker has petitioned the High Court while challenging the move of the Returning officer while the Court asked him to approach the poll body over this issue.

With HC denied to intervene into the issue, the former Minister has left with no option. Swain’s nomination paper was on Monday rejected following his failure to submit party’s official ticket, sources said.

Swain, a firebrand leader filed his nomination papers for Athagarh seat in Cuttack along with a Xerox copy of the party ticket while original copy should have been submitted before the stipulated time but Swain failed to do it.

Athagarh Sub-Collector office rejected his papers during the scrutiny, sources added. The original party ticket copy reportedly found from Swain’s personal secretary.

Sources said that due to mistake, the personal secretary did not submit the copy to the poll officials. Swain, fourth times Lawmaker has been representing the seat from 1990. While he served as Sports and Youth Affairs Minister under Naveen Patnaik’s first term as Chief Minister in 2000.

After delimitation, Athagarh Assembly constituency has assumed great significance. In post-Independence period, representatives from this Assembly segment had held important portfolios in State Council of Ministers.

BJP’s Pratap Sarangi is also a victim of the new law of the EC. Sarangi, who failed to submit his party ticket, is fighting an Independent candidate.

The nomination paper of Dara Singh also rejected. “The officials have rejected his nomination of technical ground,” a source said. Dara aka Rabindra K Pal, who is convicted in Australian Missionary Graham Stewart Staines murder case and cooling his heels at local jail, had filed his nomination paper as an Independent nominee for Ghasipura MLA seat.

He had filed his papers on April 4 at the Anadapur Sub-Collector office through of his supporter.
