Berhampur ( Orissa ): In an attempt to ignite the movement in support of the river linking projects, former deputy speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly Ram Chandra Panda would start a Jalajaatra and to put pressure on the government to facilitate the process that would be helpful in solving the water crisis of Berhampur city as well as water scarcity for irrigation in southern Odisha.
Several organizations including the Rushikulya Banchao Mancha, Mahendragiri Surakshya Mancha, Berhampur Citizens Forum, Ganjam Zilla Vikash Mancha and other such organizations would join the movement; Jalajaatra that would start from the Mahendragiri Mountain taking the water of Bansadhara River on March 05 that would conclude at Mahanadi near Dhauli where a symbolic river linking event would be held with pouring of water on March 13, in demand of the river linking system.
Panda while briefing the media on Thursday, criticized state government’s neglected attitude towards the river linking projects stating that government had been proposing at times, yet it was not taking any step even in any single project.
The government had three proposal to date including the Bansadhra-Rushikulya linking one for which even the foundation was laid at Gudari by Rabi Nanda in 2005. But till date no single project had been taken seriously, lamented Panda.
Panda had also informed that the Telengana movement had started and gained momentum only for the cause of water, hence the people of southern part of the state should wake up to launch such a movement that would solve the water crisis by linking the rivers.
Panda stated that through the movement they were going to place the demands including linking of Rushikulya and Mahendratanaya either with Mahanadi or with Bansadhara, irrigation facilities to felicitate agricultural production in both the crops, construction of check dams to store water, involvement of people in every village to secure livestock, environment and its conservation and to take Pandhayat as a unit instead of block in crop insurance and pension for farmers.
