Phulbani (Orissa): AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched party’s poll campaign by addressing several meetings at Rourkela, Rairakhol and Sonepur.
Highlighting the success of Dr Manmohan Singh led Government at Centre, the Gandhi-Nehru scion urged voters to vote in favour of Congress. He said a number of schemes were introduced and implemented during the last five years for the uplift of the poor, backward, adivasi and dalits.
He accused the BJP-led NDA of neglecting the tribals and predicted an impressive show by UPA in the ensuing polls due to the pro-poor steps taken by the Centre.
"NDA was wiped out in the 2004 general elections despite its India shining campaign as it was working for the rich people neglecting the tribals and the poor, whose plight worsened during its rule," Rahul said at Rourkela.
Affirming Congress party's resolve to work for the downtrodden, backward and dalits, the young leader said the UPA government had brought a historic bill for tribals to get back their valuable land, which had been taken away without compensation.
Listing achievements of the Congress-led government at the centre,
while the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) benefited a large number of people, mid-day meal scheme for the school children was highly successful across the country, Rahul said.
