Bhubaneswar ( Orissa): There is a customary saying " Law of the land is same for all". But, it seems for the 29-year old Catholic Nun, claiming as a victim of gang rape, law means, what the Church says.
Since August 25, the day, the Nun allegedly gang raped by a mob at K Nuagaon area in Orissa's infamous Kandhamal district, there was countrywide outrage over the issue. But, everybody keeps mum when the nun; continue to hide herself and defying Supreme Court, which had asked her to assist the Crime Branch of the Orissa Police.
A week has been passed since the Apex Court while rejecting a CBI probe into the issue, had asked the Nun to extend cooperation to the investigating officials, so that they could easily nab the culprits.
Now the question like “Is she above law of the land? Or Church has its own laws?” hanging heavy among the people of Orissa.
"In fact, we have not received any communiqué from the said nun following the Supreme Court order but we are hopeful, she may come out and assist us," SP, Crime Branch, Yatindra Koyal told this correspondent on Saturday.
"See, the nature of incident and complexity. We have to be very careful. We sure, the nun would come out and help us to further expedite investigation process," SP Koyal said.
Crime Branch officials led by IGP Arun Ray and SP Koyal, have arrested nine persons in connection with the rape case.
The Government apparently coming under pressure has already suspended as many as six police officials including Baliguda Police Station IIC and an ASI and four Jawans of Orissa State Armed Police for their negligence in duty. The Police officials excluding the IIC were reportedly present at the spot, when the Nun was gang raped.
Meanwhile, State Government's action against few policemen raised several eyebrows. "when there is no clear-cut evidence of gang rape, suspension on account of negligence theory was ridiculous and intended to appease a particular community," lambasted a former DGP of Orissa
