In a significant decision, the Committee formed by BCCI has banned Harbhajan for five ODIs based on the reports of Sudhir Nanavati who was the BCCI-appointed Commissioner to probe the slapping row between Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth.
He could not join tour of Bangladesh & two matches of Asia Cup in Pakistan following this ban.
In the report, it was mentioned that Harbhajan was admitted his guilty and prayed for leniency & assured the Committee that there would not be any misconduct on his part in the future.
The Committee invoked Rule 3.2.1 of the BCCI Regulations for Players, Team officials, Managers, Umpires &Administrators. Under this provision, the maximum punishment that can be imposed to a player is a ban up to a maximum of five ODIs or three Test matches.
The Committee accordingly decided to ban Harbhajan Singh for five one-day internationals, starting form today (14th May 2008) and any further instance of misconduct will invoke a life-ban.
It can be noted that earlier, Harbhajan Singh, the stand-in captain of Mumbai Indians, had slapped Sreesanth against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali. The TV footages showed Sreesanth in tears and later it was revealed that Bhajji had hit him during the post match ceremony.
Following that, the IPL banned him for 11 matches and cut 100 percent of the match fee.
